The End of a Thing Is Just Its Activity
Aristotle argued vigorously and at length that atoms do not exist. Chance belongs to the order of accidental being, we might say today. Each thing is good to the degree it lives up to or realizes the end for things of its kind. The telos of insects might well be to eat up various particles so that the world is not immersed in sludge. Insects are nature's sanitation engineers.
