The Negative Effects of Dubai's Palm Islands on the Environment
Dubai has become the new Las Vegas in terms of excessive energy and natural resource use. Almost 90% of Dubai's residents are workers brought in for construction projects or service jobs, hoping to make better pay in Dubai than they can in their home country. Migrant workers say they face brutal work conditions, shifts of 12 hours or more, and that companies withhold paychecks or workers' passports so as to not let them quit or return home. Human Rights Watch found only 140 inspectors for almost a quarter million businesses that employ migrant workers.
