CHAPTER

The Origins of the Mesopotamian Empires

The author of genesis is adopting a set of traditional motifs and topics from their ancient mesopotamian neighbors. He's in dialogue with them about a common cultural story line. These are stories the mesopotamians, both assyrian and babylonian, and then the empires that preceded them. And so you get that with this story here in genesis six, which is a saying, instead of the divine human mixing being something that sets human kingdoms apart for power, actually it's its cosmic rebellion. It's a sign of everything that's wrong with the world.
