The Effects of the War on Women

The advertising campaign using the heroic Rosie the Riveter successfully brought women into spaces where they had only served in domestic capacities. The long-term social effects of these wartime changes were immense as women could take pride in contributing to the war effort while learning valuable skills that would otherwise not have been offered to them. This was a fleeting moment in equality however. On May 8, 1945 Germany surrendered and after America dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the war was officially over. And so too were most of these opportunities for women.
