The Unconscious of the Text
I love the idea that midrash is the unconscious of the text. If you don't have a mad to back you up, you can't really go often and offer an unconscious interpretation. You can't interpret the unconscious oftetora sort of on your own. Many contemporary orthodox readers of the text will simply look very closely at the text. I think we are limited to the madres in our readings of the text; many people do. It may be that one can't go anywhere high unless one engages with these, with these dark drives.
