Why Local Authorities Aren't Taking Children at the Extreme End
There aren't enough places being provided through the national system. The private sector that has stepped in because local authorities have reduced their own provision are looking for profits. We're talking about incredible sums of money per child in these bespoke placements. And that adds to the concern. There was also a report recently, I think, uncovered by the BBC about a private company that was running children's homes that were regulated by Offstead and had a good Offstead rating. Those placements, those children were costing £250,000 a year per young person to give you an idea of the cost. Many of whom were nonverbal and had significant levels of need.
