Stoicism is really based on this argument why Socrates engages this dialogue where he basically says all the external goods really give you more control over your environment or they give you practical advantages. What really matters is whether you use them well or foolishly and so with a flourish he kind of concludes therefore the only truly good thing is moral wisdom that would consist in knowing how to use these things well. That's our fundamental transformation and our values though because we instinctively grow up valuing health, wealth and reputation and other external goods.
