I think of it more though as a continuum. So, religion is one extreme where unless you publicly agree assent to the claims made at one true God, they may kick you out of town or burn you at the stake. And we know that a Nobel laureate in any discipline can be wrong and doesn't need to be taken seriously if he or she is wrong. And a lowly graduate student can be right. But day to day, if somebody is too skeptical about claims, they're going to get kicked out of the club.
