I think the internet has kind of ramped up this categorization a lot. By defining yourself in a category it allows you to reach across that divide and find other people who share similar experiences or attitudes towards life as you do. But I think the other thing is that it kind of lets us excuse those same conditions of life. It's much easier to say ah this is a symptom of something within myself rather than something that's wrong with the system or the collective right.
