Investigators attemptd to determine what caused the horizontal stabilizer to move immediately after the auto pilot disconnect. The antise looked into what could have caused the excessive wear of the acme nut threads, and they found no evidence of grease in any condition inside the acmenut or the acme screw. There was not sufficient lubrication for these parts. Even though the jack screw assemb was immersed in sea water for seven and a half days, sea water would not significantly alter or remove grease. And on january 19 99, this crash happened only four months before should have been greased with fresh grease
