Pete Buttigieg was the first candidate to get a 45-minute town hall on CNN. He raised $24 million in his first quarter of fundraising, says former Iowa Gov. John Hickenlooper. "He avoided that sort of push and pull that we saw a lot of the other candidates get into," he adds.

Lis Smith is a veteran political strategist affiliated with the Democratic Party. Most recently, she was senior adviser to Pete Buttigieg in his 2020 presidential campaign. Her memoir is Any Given Tuesday: A Political Love Story.
