The Origins of Empire Style Dresses

The necklines were sort of a scoop low and the idea was to show the entire top of your decolotage or bosom as they refer to it. Women didn't have bras like they do today so you had a series of things that sort of you had aseries of underlayers and you had a girdle but you weren't closed in like you would be today. Some of the more spectacularly scandalous individuals at the time would wear very thin like almost a like muslin style dresses with very few layers underneath which leaves not a whole lot to the imagination.
