How Did Neolithic People Travel Longer Seas?
At Lake Prachiano, about 20 miles northwest of Rome, a Neolithic settlement is preserved. Five large wooden boats were dug out canoes that date from somewhere between 5,700 and 5,500 BC. The two largest were more than 36 feet, 11 meters in length. They had a rough-hewn keel with oars and attachments that might have been for outriggers or even to turn them into a dual-hold catamaran.
