In western culture, in all culture, power, wealth and status are the three things. And some people actually want power more than they want stuff. Some people just want status, like narcisistic people who can't get enough of people screaming their praises. But that's at the very top, down at the level where most of us live. We just think, oh, if i had that, i'd be happy - but it's a very pernicious story.
