The Paralympian was born in Ukraine with birth defects. She had one leg amputated above the knee and her right real leg was deformed. At 13, she tried rowing for the first time but didn't want to do it because of how adapted it was. The sport gave her a way to process things that she experienced as a child at orphanages.
