What Is This Being For?
The governing questions for us are not as they were for the ancients. What is this being for, but rather how does this being work? If we understand how this being works, we can control the causal forces of that being and harness it to our particular needs. But if we don't ask what things are for, in a Aristotelian language, the final cause, the questions of the human questions are fundamentally altered. The drama of forming one's own character with the risk and possibility involved in that turns for us into a manual of maintenance schedules and self-improvement. Even death, as Yves Haurari has recently argued, has lost any religious or metaphysical meaning.
