The Differences Between Spanish and English Ships
Sailing ships can only go in a certain number of directions. So to have the enemy in front of you when you have the wind behind you is an enormous advantage. Another key factor in this and later engagements is the differences between the ships used by the two countries. The spanish vessels are huge, each one capable of carrying four to 500 troops. The english, on the other hand, have opted for what is termed a race built design. Their ships are narrower, faster and more manoeuvrable with better sail plans to maximise speed.
