The Stoics say we often engage in selective thinking. We take things out of context when we're really upset, he says. Anger is a cake that's baked with many different ingredients and you can change the recipe if you know how to do it. One of the most powerful tools at your disposal is the ability to notice the beliefs that cause your emotions and to view them with detachment. That's shifting perspective, which we call cognitive diffusing.
Elliot Chung, a student at Phillips Academy Andover, interviewed me recently for his new Philosophy for the Modern Mind podcast, and we decided to share our conversation on this podcast as well.
