The Limitations of Language in D&D

There's no gradation to your understanding of language. It's just either you speak this language or you don't. And if you unless you're like a barbarian or have certain backgrounds or something, if you speak it, you can read it. That was something back in second edition D&D and then when third edition came out, they just said,. if you speak the language, you also write it. So it's kind of this weird place.
