There's a misconception that people who practice consensual nonmonogamy are having unsafe and risky sex. In one of my studies, I compared rates of STIs for people in monogamous versus consensually nonmonogamous relationships to find no difference. A lot of it comes down to the ways in which people are communicating about their sexual health with partners when they have multiple partners.
