There's an implicit sort of size constraint that philosophers assume when they think of thought experiments. But I think Jason does get onto something interesting, which is that there is a certain kind of thought experiment that really is just an experiment when you are unable to have the apparatus to pull it off. So depending on how you do the what if and how you build it up, it seems like you get a different intuition. Thought experiments have this ability to be a bit deceptive because there's an narrative device going on.
