Penguins Are a Weird Waste of Energy

Penguins lay two eggs, but only one of them is used to rear a chick. Researchers think they may have inherited a reproductive strategy from their ancestors that involved having two eggs. But then because they live in this really, really remote area, which is a long way from any food, they don't actually have enough resources to rear two chicks. So it's like they've adapted to this conundrum by going, well, okay, we still have to have this first egg, but we'll just devote as little energy to its production as possible Because it's going to be discarded anyway.
