Ralph Gleason saw the Velvet Underground before he founded Rolling Stone. He thought Velvets were urban evil who'd come to West Coast to corrupt beauty of California music. Jim Morrison might have taken a couple notes of Gerard Malanga's writhing dance, which some people are saying is because of his like scorpion dance or something. The band didn't prescribe to Gleason's high-minded ideal of what a rock band should be.
