CHAPTER

The Dopamine Deficit State of Addiction - What the Brain Can't Control?

The L-Dopa does get converted to dopamine in the brain and does act on the reward circuit. But it doesn't give people a kind of high typically, which is what drives compulsive nature of addiction. The brain compensates by down-regulating its own endogenous dopamine production and transmission. That's achieved with no work, right? You just take a pill, or you do this at easy activity, and you get this sudden surge in dopamine. And that's what leads to ultimately this overcompensation, the stokamine deficit state, and the vortex of compulsive overuse.
