The religious right becomes political and politically active in a major way in the 19 seventies. During carter's ill fated presidency, the late 19 seventies, when he's got all sorts of problems to deal with. Among white voters, the main line protestant churches continue to decline in membership. Those who identify as observant catholics and protestants are trending republican and trending conservative.
