blues scholar Samuel Charters published the first book length treatment of Delta Blues in 1959. Johnson's records remained unavailable after their initial release until 1959. He talked about how he'd been poisoned by his common moral wife, about how his records were recorded in a pool hall. The finest of Robert Johnson's blues have a brooding sense of torment and despair.
