The Fed was founded in 1913 to provide an elastic currency. During a crisis, what happens is there's a tremendous flight to safety and that flight to safety asset can vary over times. In recent times, it's been the US dollar and US Treasury. And so ultimately, this manifests itself as a lower purchasing power for the currency going forward.
