Isabelle told Tom she was serious about marrying him, but he said no. So inside note, Tom tracked down his mother when he was 21 and with the help of a private detective learned that his mother had died three weeks earlier. Five days later, Tom is on the cliff and he hammers a small cross to the ground with the date 31 May 1922, remembered always. And he dug a hole for the rosemary bush. She had moved from the herb garden. The graves of her three miscarried children were as recent as two weeks.
