The best process for choosing an equity portfolio, i'm just talking about the equity portion of it, is to use the fama french factors. The two most important there are value versus growth and small versus large. After that, you get to things like quality and low volatility. I think those have been own by academics to be the most useful differentiators when you're talking about picking differentiated stock funds.
