The Importance of the First Sentence
The backdrop for me, the first thing for me, is always landscape. And in the ghost ship, it's the sea around the Canary Islands and North Africa. But everything else, my characters are imagined people that could have lived. They're not based on real people. So by the time you've got a proper stage set, the real history is the backdrop of the novel.
