What Is the Magnetic Field of the Earth?
Charge particles follow magnetic fields. It's dissipated above the earth. We have this plasma streaming towards us all the time from the sun, the solar wind. But it's the magnetic field of the earth that pushes most of that plasma around. And as you imagine, the earth is one big bar magnet. That plasma streams down to the top to the poles where the magnetic fields lines come together. This is why we see the northern lights or those in the south pole - that's that plasma interacting with the upper atmosphere.
