The History of Magnetic Compasses

Magnetic compasses were first developed in china, all the way back in about 200 b e. But their first uses for navigational purposes seem to have come along a lot later. The first written reference to navigational compasses in china dates back to about the year ten forty. And in europe, they were in use by about the end of the twelfth century. By about the thirteenth century, navigators in the mediterranean were using portolan charts to plot their courses.
