How to Build a Character in a Short Story

Think about the back story of a character. Decide, you don't decide who the villain is. And then decide what their good attributes are,. What's the line that will take that good character and turn im bad? Shoot his dog. Turns out that's a good motivator. So before you know it, some of your plot points are going to start just sliding naturally into place because you're starting to think about a long term character arc for both good and bad.
