The Subversive Power of Margaret Hale
The connection with Shirley is really sort of deep. They knew when Gaskell's writing Mary Barton, no Charlotte Bront is writing Shirley. And they sort of arranged to publish one before the other. The village that Margaret Hale comes from is called a Hylston which is like to say, I'm taking on from Caroline Hylston in Shirley and I'm continuing this woman's growth.
