In 1897, Dr. Harvey Cushing of disease fame developed an appendicitis three weeks after he lost a patient following an appendectomy. In 1889, there was a New York doctor, Charles McBurnie, who wrote about the splitting of the specific procedure to remove the appendix. By then, we really had developed a system of ethics around the medicine where we wouldn't do something just cause.
