Melville seemed cognizant of the fact that it was going to be a flop. Nobody actually wants to deal with like, this big, meady story. They just want saxond violence and cannibalism, i guess, cause it's tasty. Ye this, this novel was a failure. And then eventually he had to kind of settle for writing short stories like bartleby. But you coun tell that even there, of course, he's still kind of pushing back against what's expected of him.
