Shame is the uncomfortable sensation that we feel in the pit of our stomach when it seems we have no safe haven from the judging gaze of other people. Guilt and shame serve as emotional, cognitive, behavioral triggers signaling the need for realignment That something's wrong. Women are quicker to feel humiliated than men; adolescents feel shame more intensely than adults do. We all perform misdeeds and can feel bad about doing those. But the essential issue is to recognize what we've done, make amends, learn from our experiences so that we refrain from repeating those harms.
