How to Write a Good First Chapter

The first chapter is likely not where we should put back story. The setting in our very first chapter should be an interesting place one that contributes to the story. Not all chapter endings need a cliffhanger ending but there should be a plot element unanswered unresolved at the end of the first chapter. If something is dull in a novel something is wrong and something can be improved.
