In the west, you go back to the protestant reformation and and the wars of religion. And i don't think we can a over emphasize how important the devastation of those wars were,. So out of that come enlightenent minds who say if this christianity is true, and this how it works, outs not looking so good to me. The church withdraws either into int piety, or it intellectualizes, and eventually you get what came to be called modernism. But they didn't stand up to the map very well when all this change started happening. There was an intellectual withdrawal, if you will.
