Should the U.S. Have Free Immigration?

The Soho Forum Debates

CHAPTER

The Libertarian Response to Public Education

Ludic Von Mises: Those who rely on the welfare state to argue against free immigration are not consistent libertarians and those who claim to be anarcho-capitalist are contradicting their own supposed ideology. They often argue, like Milton Friedman did in his quote above, that because the US has a welfare state, then that means the country can't have free immigration or that we should even more radically reduce legal immigration. That is a non-libertarian reaction to the existence of the welfare state. The real libertarian reaction is to try to abolish the welfare state or at a very minimum to build a higher wall around it.
