The New Definition of Iron Restricted Erythropoiesis
A ferritin less than 15 is considered diagnostic for iron deficiency. You also need to look at the transfer and saturation activity. Even if someone has a high ferritin, you check the soluble transfer and receptor activity. If that's really high, that can suggest they're actually truly iron deficient.
