What Can We Do About the Pandemic?
President Trump came into office with a notion called America First, which to me reflects a sense of provincialism. I think it goes back several hundred years and really to the period in which the notion of the individual grew in significance. A lot of what we see happening now is a product of ideas that became particularly influential during the 18th and 19th century around concepts of social contracts between citizens and the monarch or state.
