Why Is It That Writers and Producers Selectively Appeal to History to Justify Problematic Content in Fictional Stories?

The argument is just so unnecessary because, like, portrayal doesn't equal endorsement. There are plenty of writers who write incredibly problematic shet in all their books and never justify it. I would find it all much more acceptable if his pushback was like, literally, that's what you're mad about.
