Yevtushenko was pressured to add more about Soviet suffering and heroism during World War II. Shostakovich felt betrayed by these changes, but also knew that perhaps it was necessary to save the peace from being banned in the future. There is a coldness to their reaction to the upcoming text that again puts us into two frames of mind at once.
