The Rise and Fall of the Anti-Slavery Movement

There have always been various kinds of resistance to slavery or unease about slavery, right from the 17th century. By around the 1830s, you start to get a different position and much more organization of small, local and different kinds of abolitionist groups. Although it is a strong movement, there are many people involved in anti-slavery work. They aren't all necessarily working together by the time Stowe writes her novel.
