The cosmological constant is this field sometimes called dark energy still not understood at all and only observed in its effects on the expansion of the universe which causes the expansion. Up to that moment was believed to be while it was expanding the expansion was slowing down, but now we know there's no such thing as a 'slowdown' We can't go get some very distant galaxies because they're just going to be ripped away from us by the expansion and we'll never see them again.
