The queen of Madagascar killed 30 to 50% of the entire population. She also executed a lot of her own people. The island has been known as this very rich biodiverse hot spot for centuries. If anything, Madagascar is an island I would almost call a little India,. Like Indonesia, it was much closer to Indonesia in terms of its people and population versus Africa.
In 1828, after the death of her husband, Queen Ranavalona I. came into power by killing all other potential regents (wives, sons, mothers). At that time, she was between 30 and 40 years old. Ranavalona I. went down in history rather ingloriously and bears the surname “the cruel”. Many Malagasy call her regency tany maizina, in English “years of darkness”. But despite this she is still a rather complex character. One who did amazing and terrible things at the same time. Let us tell her story today
