The Spirit of Abstraction in Modern Politics
Edmund burke was the first and greatest critic of the literary spirit, or the spirit of abstraction in modern politics. He never denounced metaphysics or political theory, but this idea that politics can be based upon a system he was very sceptical about. Burke had thought there was an intimate connection between the christian religion and mercy, chivalry, gentlemanliness. But so there's the spirit of abstractions under conditions of modernity. We migt even say idiology is a constant temptation under conditions ofmodernity.
