Byron's First Major Poem
He savaged his own... He was the ward of the Earl of Carlisle, who had refused to introduce him in the House of Lords. It became a kind of badge of honor to have been savaged in English bards and Scottish reviewers. So this boy raised his fist and smashed it through with English as a subject. And he did it in style, and as you say, it made his reputation. But stick to the point at the time, if we can't. Byron regretted it later in his career.
