Cast Shadows and Edges and Temperature
Painters can run into problems with the cast shadows is value also edges and temperature. People should be on the lookout for if their light and shadows aren't working like you mentioned flatten before that things can feel flattened. I actually spend way more time than I would like to admit working on my cast shadow edges in every painting it's pretty important for conveying texture right they're a big part of that too.
